Beau Constantia

Beau Constantia is a boutique winery on the tip of Constantia Nek, overlooking False Bay. On vineyards, which are among the steepest on the Cape, wine is cultivated up to 350 meters above sea level. The lovingly cultivated vineyards offer a wonderful panoramic view of the mountain ranges from Stellenbosch via Helderberg and False Bay to Hangklip.

After the devastating fires in 2000 destroyed the fynbos and pine forests on the Beau Constantia property, the slopes were cleared and terraced, offering great potential for planting vineyards. Pierre and Cecily Du Preez acquired the 22-hectare site in 2002, and after extensive soil analysis, Beau Constantia planted the first vineyards in 2003 with the help of dedicated manager Japie Bronn. Japie's wild beard still characterizes the design of Beau Constantia and is shown in full glory on the label of the Pas de Nom Range. The development of the vineyards on the steep slopes required a lot of patience and effort, but today the farm is proud of 11.47 hectares of vineyards. The cultivated varieties include Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Shiraz and Petit Verdot. The Viognier is promising after debut wine Beau Constantia Cecily was named best Viognier at the 2010 Novare Terroir Wine Awards and rated 92 points by Neal Martin, Wine Advocate South Africa reviewer, Robert Parker.

Several years ago, they launched a lifestyle wine series called Pas De Nom. The assortment consists of a white blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier and a red blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. To complete the collection, they later added a Saigneé-style Beau Constantia rose and a vintage MCC. Together with the white wines Pierre and Cecily, they have also released two premium red blends under the bespoke label Beau Constantia, all handcrafted by winemaker Justin van Wyk to his unique style. The first is a classic and elegant blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux style, called Lucca. The second is a more modern and opulent blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot, named after Lucca's brother Aidan.

Megan van der Merwe took over the role of chief winemaker and oenologist at Beau Constantia in 2019, having made the Beau Constantia wines as assistant winemaker together with Justin van Wyk since 2015.

In addition to the Tasting Room, Beau Constantia is a branch of the popular Chef's Warehouse. Under the humble name 'Tapas for 2', 7 courses of finger food with the delicious Beau Constantia wines are offered. The restaurant is in high demand and reservations should be made 2-3 months before.
