Diemersfontein is a family owned and run winery which has become a household name in South Africa, (and in many countries abroad) in the relatively short period of fourteen years since third generation owners David and Susan Sonnenberg built the cellar in 2000. This idyllic estate, a mere hour’s drive from Cape Town in the heart of the magnificent Cape Winelands is located in the Wellington wine district – which was recently voted winner of the national “best terroir” competition - based principally on the excellence of its Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and Malbec wines. Wine has been made for many centuries in this staggeringly beautiful mountainous valley, since the first Dutch settlers brought European wine growing techniques to the Cape.

Diemersfontein has been a mixed agricultural farm since the early 1700’s. It is known for its beauty, informal elegance and grace, its setting amongst spacious and rolling gardens, its guest house offering, warm and relaxed hospitality; and currently, the visitor experience includes a restaurant, and an opportunity to savour its distinctive wines.

David's grandfather, Max, bought the 183 hectare farm in 1943. The first vineyards were planted by David's father in the 1970s, and in 2000 David built his own cellar and started producing award-winning estate wines. Vineyard plantings include Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Grenache & Mourvedre. Deep, rich, well-drained, decomposed granite soils produce intense, fruit driven wines. Diemersfontein Wines gained early distinction through its association with Pinotage (the truly original South African grape variety). At the classic end of the spectrum, the estate’s flagship Diemersfontein Reserve Pinotage, which famously won the South Africa Red Wine Trophy at the 2005 International Wine Challenge, and the Old Mutual Trophy for Best Pinotage in 2002 and 2003, again came out tops in 2013 – making it the only South African wine to date to win the award three times. In 2001 Diemersfontein made history by creating the first and original “coffee-chocolate Pinotage” – a wine so unique and loved by its “fanclub” that it has earned itself cult status among most South African Pinotage lovers who celebrate each vintage launch with a big, fun filled extravagant wine festival known as Pinotage on Tap! Most recently it was the only wine written up by “Consumer reports” at the recent New York Wine Expo. Wine Enthusiast rated it 91 points. It won a gold award at the recent Dijon “Vinidivio” in Burgundy, France.

Diemersfontein is proud to be home to one of each of these remarkable Pinotage thoroughbreds… with elegance, class & sophistication in one stable and exuberance, confidence & attitude in the other. The Estate also produces Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec varietal red wines as well as Rhone-type blends

Its white wines have also achieved significant approval – Diemersfontein Reserve Chenin Blanc – also a variety special to South Africa – was the Wellington area’s first white wine five star award in 2011 in South Africa’s well known John Platter Guide. Its Reserve Viognier is well loved in the USA.

Diemersfontein produces several ranges under the auspices of experienced winemaker Francois Roode, who has been at Diemersfontein since 2005. Thokozani – a company owned by the staff of Diemersfontein with the estate owning a minority shareholding. It produces two Blends - A Red Rhone Blend, and a Chenin Blanc /Chardonnay and Viognier Blend.

Diemersfontein contributes to its environment in many respects - through the founding of a primary school for all members of our surrounding community, the creation of a “black empowerment company” for worker shareholding participation, a wine range supporting Bird Life South Africa’s penguin conservation project (“For the Birds”) and a programme for the showcasing and sponsorship of talented young South African musicians and singers. This commitment and respect for people, and the development of excellence in our country we hope permeates our approach to our winemaking.
