Backsberg

is one of the long-established names in the South African wine industry. The Back family's story began in 1902 with the arrival of Charles Louis Back in South Africa. In 1916 he acquired a farm near Paarl, laying the foundation for a wine business shaped by the family over four generations.

Backsberg's historic roots lie on the Simonsberg near Paarl. Since the repositioning of the brand, the winery and its visitor centre have been located in the Franschhoek Valley. There, the story of the former estate continues through modern wine production and a redesigned range.

Backsberg offers a versatile selection of white, red and rosé wines. The range includes Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, among others. The wines combine clear fruit with an approachable style and range from uncomplicated varietal wines to more sophisticated blends and selected premium wines.

With names such as Gravel Road, Citrus Hill, Blueberry Row and Four Pillars, the Fifth Generation line recalls places and stories from the original family estate. The Family Tree range includes the Smuggled Vines Chardonnay, Pumphouse Shiraz and the John Martin blend. At the top of the range is The Patriarch, a Cabernet Franc created in honour of Sydney Back.

Responsible use of natural resources is an essential part of Backsberg's philosophy. Around 2006, the company became the first South African winery to be certified carbon neutral and continues this approach in its current production.

Since 2021, the South African wine company DGB has held the majority stake in Backsberg Family Wines. The Back family remains connected with the brand, while production and the visitor centre in Franschhoek have entered a new phase.
