Buitenverwachting wines from Constantia

Buitenverwachting is situated on the eastern slopes of the Constantiaberg, only a few kilometres from False Bay. This historic winery belongs to the famous Constantia wine region south of Cape Town. Its name means roughly “beyond all expectations” and today stands for characterful wines from one of South Africa's oldest wine landscapes.

The estate was originally part of the historic Constantia Estate founded by Simon van der Stel. In 1773, Buitenverwachting was sold as an independent property. An important step in its development came in 1825, when Ryk Arnoldus Cloete planted around 90,000 vines. The Müller family later revived the winery and its historic buildings.

The vineyards are characterised by deep, weathered granite soils and cooling sea breezes. Cold nights and moderate daytime temperatures extend the grapes' ripening period. This produces wines that combine freshness, aromatic clarity and pronounced structure.

Sauvignon Blanc is of particular importance. The winery's different sites produce both ripe aromas of melon, passion fruit and yellow apple and fresher wines shaped by citrus fruit and green notes. The south-facing Hussey's Vlei site shows a particularly cool and mineral expression of the variety.

The range also includes Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Rosé and various white blends. For red wines, Buitenverwachting focuses on classic Bordeaux varieties. The Meifort and Christine blends combine Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and other varieties with extended maturation in French oak barrels.

Buitenverwachting stands for elegant wines that reflect Constantia's moderate climate and historic origins. Discover selected white and red wines from Buitenverwachting at Vin Africa, from one of the Cape's best-known wine regions.
