Miles Mossop Wines
was founded in 2004 by Miles and Samantha Mossop as a family-run wine brand. Miles Mossop combines his background in geology with studies in viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University. After professional experience in South Africa, Australia, the USA and Europe, he headed winemaking at Tokara from 2000 to 2018. Since then, he has focused entirely on his own collection.
Miles Mossop Wines is not a traditional estate whose wines come exclusively from contiguous, estate-owned vineyards. Instead, the winemaker selects individual parcels across the Western Cape whose soils, age and climatic conditions suit each particular wine. Production is deliberately limited, allowing smaller vineyards and distinctive grape varieties to be expressed individually.
Selected sites in Stellenbosch form the focus of the red wines. For the Bordeaux blend Max, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc are sourced from areas including Polkadraai Hills and Bottelary. Weathered granite soils, sandy loam, shale components and gravel-rich formations meet different elevations and aspects. This diversity produces structured wines with dark fruit, fine herbal notes, present tannins and good ageing ability.
Chenin Blanc also occupies an important place in the portfolio. The white blend Saskia combines Chenin Blanc with varieties such as Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Verdelho. Kika is a noble-sweet Chenin Blanc speciality from vineyards in the Bottelary area. The family collection is complemented by Sam, a Stellenbosch red wine led by Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Max, also based on Cabernet Sauvignon.
With The Chapters range, Miles Mossop places greater emphasis on individual vineyards and grape varieties. These include Cinsault from old, unirrigated bush vines in Swartland, as well as Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc from old vineyards in Bottelary. Weathered granite in Swartland and Malmesbury shale in Stellenbosch each shape a distinct style. Whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation, used French oak barrels and concrete vessels are employed selectively depending on the wine, without obscuring its origin.
The entry-level range The Introduction shows the more approachable side of the house. It combines clear fruit and freshness with restrained maturation in which new oak is avoided. Overall, Miles Mossop wines stand for a combination of ripe fruit, structure, texture and lively acidity. At Vin Africa, wine lovers therefore find a versatile selection reflecting both classic Stellenbosch and distinctive sites in Swartland.
