Neil Ellis
began in 1984 by sourcing grapes from selected vineyards in the Stellenbosch District and processing them in rented cellar facilities. At a time when South African wine law still severely restricted the free sourcing of grapes, he placed the suitability of individual sites for particular grape varieties at the centre of his approach. In doing so, he became one of the pioneers of an origin-focused négociant model at the Cape.
Neil Ellis Wines should therefore not be understood as a classic estate with a single contiguous vineyard. The producer selects vineyards in several South African regions and works with sites that offer particularly suitable conditions for each grape variety. Its headquarters, with winery, tasting room and restaurant, are located on Helshoogte Road near Stellenbosch.
In Stellenbosch, Neil Ellis focuses among other places on sites in the Jonkershoek Valley and the Bottelary Hills. Differences in elevation, slopes and deep red clay soils create varied conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and other red varieties. Distinctive wines include Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon, Bottelary Pinotage and the Cabernet-led flagship Webb Ellis.
For Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, the producer also uses vineyards in Groenekloof on South Africa's west coast. These dry sites, influenced by the Atlantic, have deep soils of weathered granite. Many vines are grown as unirrigated bush vines, which can result in small yields, concentrated fruit and pronounced structure.
The grapes for Whitehall Chardonnay, among others, come from the cool Elgin region. This high-lying area offers long, even ripening periods and soils of sandstone, quartz, clay and shale. In Piekenierskloof, Neil Ellis works with old Grenache bush vines planted in 1964 and grown without irrigation on sandstone and shale soils. Large differences between day and night temperatures contribute to fruit richness, freshness and fine spice.
In the cellar, the aim is to preserve the character of each site. Neil Ellis Wines combines ripe, healthy fruit with restrained intervention and distinguishes between individual vineyards, smaller parcels and regionally influenced blends. The company is certified under the South African IPW and WIETA programmes and cites soil conservation, careful use of water, recycling and preservation of native fynbos vegetation as important elements of its work.
The current range extends from Groenekloof Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon to single-site wines such as Amica Sauvignon Blanc, Whitehall Chardonnay and Piekenierskloof Grenache. It also includes blends such as Rodanos, The Left Bank and Webb Ellis.
