Perdeberg Wines
is located near Windmeul in the Paarl hinterland at the foot of the Paardeberg. The estate lies in a transitional area between Paarl and Swartland, providing access to grapes from different microclimates and soil formations. Particularly important are dry-farmed vineyards that rely largely or entirely on winter rainfall and require no additional irrigation during the warm summer months.
The history of Perdeberg began in 1941. At that time, winegrower Jan Rossouw suggested that the growers in the area join forces and make wine from their grapes themselves instead of merely selling them to other cellars. From these cooperative origins, Perdeberg developed into an independent producer with a broad portfolio. The name refers to the Cape mountain zebras that once lived on Paardeberg and were mistaken for wild horses by early inhabitants of the region.
Chenin Blanc is of particular importance. Perdeberg works with both younger vineyards and older bush vines and has devoted many years to this grape variety, which is so important to South Africa. The wines range from fresh, uncomplicated Chenin Blancs to oak-aged bottlings and single-vineyard wines. Wines of South Africa has previously listed Perdeberg as one of the notable Chenin Blanc producers from Paarl.
The Dry Land Collection expresses a key part of Perdeberg's identity. The grapes come from vineyards that rely predominantly on natural winter rainfall. Depending on the site, the soils include Malmesbury shale, Glenrosa soils and weathered granite. Lower water availability results in smaller berries and more concentrated grapes, while the different soil types influence structure, freshness and spice. Alongside Chenin Blanc, the range includes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and both white and red blends.
The Endura Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc is an example of the stronger focus on individual sites. The current wine comes from a single Chenin Blanc vineyard on Paardeberg with highly weathered granite soils. For the 2025 vintage, the grapes were hand-picked and then fermented in ceramic amphorae, specialised tanks and French oak barrels. Lees ageing combines ripe stone fruit and citrus notes with freshness and a mineral impression.
In addition to the Dry Land Collection, Perdeberg offers several other ranges. These include the more approachable Classic Collection, the variety-focused Vineyard Collection and wines such as Endura and G.O.A.T. Old Vine Chenin Blanc. The portfolio ranges from Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Grenache Blanc to Pinotage, Cinsault and Malbec, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Perdeberg also produces Cap Classique, rosé and sweet and fortified Chenin Blanc wines.
Perdeberg therefore combines a long history of winegrowing in Paarl with a particularly close connection to dry-farmed vineyards and Chenin Blanc. The varied sites between Paarl and Swartland allow the production of both fresh, early-drinking wines and more concentrated bottlings from old or specially selected vineyards.
