Stellenrust
is one of Stellenbosch's historic family wineries. The property's roots go back to a land grant in 1692, while the first vintage under the Stellenrust name was bottled in 1928. The name can be translated roughly as “finding peace in Stellenbosch” and reflects the estate's close connection to its origin.
Today Stellenrust is managed by Kobie van der Westhuizen and Tertius Boshoff. Both joined the family business in 2005 and brought different professional backgrounds with them. Kobie van der Westhuizen is a trained chartered accountant, while Tertius Boshoff initially studied medicine and dentistry before both devoted themselves fully to winegrowing.
Stellenrust processes grapes from almost 400 hectares of vineyards around Stellenbosch. Some of the sites are located in the so-called Golden Triangle on the Helderberg, an area particularly known for structured red wines. Other vineyards lie in the maritime-influenced Bottelary Hills, where cooler conditions and sandy loam soils particularly shape Chenin Blanc and other white varieties. On the Helderberg, by contrast, weathered granite soils dominate.
Chenin Blanc occupies a central place in the range. Stellenrust works with several older bush-vine vineyards and produces both fresh, approachable wines and more complex single-vineyard bottlings from them. Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc comes from a vineyard planted in 1964 on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills. The number on the label indicates the age of the vines in the year of harvest.
The red-wine range extends from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinotage to Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Cinsault. Peppergrinder's Shiraz shows the spicy style of the Golden Triangle sites, while Timeless Red Blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Old bush vines are also used for Old Bush Vine Cinsaut, whose style is shaped more by red fruit and fine structure than by heavy concentration.
The range is divided into the approachable Kleine Rust Range, the classic Premium Range and smaller Super-Premium and Curator's bottlings. The still wines are complemented by bottle-fermented Cap Classique, a Chenin Blanc sparkling wine and the sweet Chenin d' Muscat. Stellenrust therefore combines uncomplicated everyday wines with characterful bottlings from old vines and selected Stellenbosch sites.
