Vin de Constance

is the famous sweet wine from Klein Constantia. It comes from the slopes of the Constantiaberg south of Cape Town, where weathered granite soils and cooling winds from False Bay shape the vineyards.

Vin de Constance is made from Muscat de Frontignan. The grapes remain on the vines for a long time and are selected by hand in several passes during harvest. Natural concentration develops intense sweetness and a complex range of aromas.

Depending on the vintage, the wine shows notes of apricot, peach, quince, dried fruit, honey, caramel and fine spices. Lively acidity and a slight saline freshness keep the wine balanced despite its richness. Long maturation in different wooden barrels gives it additional depth and structure.

The history of sweet Constantia wines dates back to the 18th century. They were prized at European royal courts and appeared in the works of famous writers. After production had been interrupted for many years, Vin de Constance was revived at Klein Constantia in the 1980s. The first modern vintage dates from 1986.

Vin de Constance is a distinctive partner for fruit desserts, mature cheese and fine pastries. It can also be served on its own and, thanks to its combination of sweetness, acidity and alcohol, has exceptionally long ageing potential.
