Glenwood is located in the idyllic, peaceful valley of Robertsvlei close to Franschhoek. The winery was established in 1984 and works exclusively with the French grape varieties of Chardonnay, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. On flatland areas of Glenwood, where no vines are planted, great efforts are made to return the original and natural vegetation of “fynbos”. The soils in Franschhoek are widely regarded as best suited to the production of chardonnay, for which Glenwood is well known and praised. Three different chardonnays are produced at Glenwood including an unwooded chardonnay, the Chardonnay VS (Vigneron’s Selection) and the Gran Duc Chardonnay, a remarkably elegant, barrel fermented wine.

Winemaker DP Burger predominantly produces single varietal wines. In keeping with his credo of “simple, natural, quality”, he avoids exaggerated cellar techniques and employs unmechanised viticultural practices in the vineyards. Slow and controlled fermentation processes are incorporated in the cellar making use of large wine barrels. The uniqueness of each vintage is left to the microclimate to determine with character of the wines being left for the individual grape varieties to determine. This credo is implemented in all aspects of Glenwood such as the architecture, label design, decision making processes, replanting of “Fynbos”, the quality of the grapes and the wines as well as interpersonal relationships on the farm.

In the autumn of 2013 the highly successful restaurant of Franschhoek, Le Bon Vivant, opened a lunch bistro at Glenwood winery where specialised, lighter meals are paired with the various wines of Glenwood. Alternatively an a la Carte menu is also available featuring delectable meals that can be enjoyed with Glenwood wines. Bookings are advised in order to secure a table at Bon Vivant @ Glenwood.
