Bergsig Wine Estate in the Breedekloof Valley

is located in the Breedekloof Valley near Breërivier, where the foothills of the Drakenstein Mountains and Hex River Mountains face one another. The vineyards lie on the upper slopes of the Breede River Valley at elevations of around 240 to 350 metres. As the valley narrows, it creates a natural funnel effect that channels cooling winds through the vineyards during summer. At the same time, cold winters and pronounced differences between day and night temperatures lead to comparatively slow grape ripening.

The Lategan family has been associated with Bergsig since 1843. Willem Hendrik Lategan settled on the farm at that time, and almost two centuries later the estate is still family-owned. The family's South African roots reach back even further to 1735, when Johann Hermann Lategan arrived at the Cape. Bergsig was officially registered as an estate in 1978, and the first Bergsig Estate wine bottled on the property was released in the same year. Today the family tradition continues across several generations.

The estate's location on a major geological fault zone shapes its soils. The slopes consist mainly of weathered sandstone, while sediments of different origins have accumulated in the valley. Soil structure, water-holding capacity and exposure therefore vary considerably across the farm. Drawing on the experience of several generations, the vineyards are planted with grape varieties specifically suited to each parcel.

Bergsig is particularly versatile in its white varieties. Chenin Blanc is one of the estate's important wines, ranging from the fresh Estate Chenin Blanc to Patmos Chenin Blanc Reserve from a single vineyard. Bergsig also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The Chardonnay is partly fermented in small oak barrels and combines citrus fruit with a creamier texture, while Riesling and Gewürztraminer show the aromatic side of the cooler Breedekloof climate.

The red-wine portfolio is equally broad. Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon are among the classic Estate wines, complemented by Touriga Nacional and various blends. Pinotage shows ripe plum, dark berries and spicy notes, while Cabernet Sauvignon is shaped more strongly by dark fruit and firm structure. Touriga Nacional also demonstrates that Breedekloof's climatic conditions suit grape varieties originally associated with warmer European regions.

Above the classic Estate Range sit the Lategan Reserve Collection and the Icarus wines. The Reserve line recalls people and events from the family's history through names such as Patmos, Tant Anna and Oom Prop. Icarus represents the blend-focused pinnacle of the portfolio and at the same time reflects the Lategan family's long-standing enthusiasm for aviation. The range is complemented by Cap Classique and various smaller bottlings.

As a true estate, Bergsig makes its wines from grapes grown in its own vineyards and produces and bottles them on the property. Soil conservation and preservation of the landscape also play an important role. The winery is certified under South Africa's IPW system, and more than 437 hectares of mountain, river and valley landscape have been cleared of invasive plants and preserved as natural habitat. At Vin Africa, Bergsig therefore stands for family-shaped wines from a lesser-known but climatically fascinating part of the Breede River Valley.
