Rustenberg Wine Estate
is located in Ida's Valley at the foot of the Simonsberg, north of the town of Stellenbosch. The estate covers around 880 hectares, of which approximately 120 hectares are planted with vines. Pastures, historic buildings, gardens and protected fynbos landscapes complement the vineyards and shape the character of this extensive family estate.
The winegrowing history of Rustenberg began in 1682, when Roelof Pasman recognised the potential of the site and planted the first vines. Wine has been bottled on the estate without interruption since 1892. At that time, John Xavier Merriman and his brother-in-law John Barry replanted vineyards damaged by phylloxera and made a major contribution to reviving the estate.
Peter and Pamela Barlow acquired Rustenberg in 1941 and later reunited the estate with neighbouring Schoongezicht. Their son Simon Barlow has run the business with his family since 1987. Murray Barlow joined in 2012 after studying oenology in Australia and today is primarily responsible for winemaking and marketing.
The vineyards climb well above the valley floor on the red slopes of Simonsberg. Different elevations, gradients and aspects make it possible to plant grape varieties selectively on suitable parcels. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are particularly important at Rustenberg. Depending on the wine, the technical sheets identify weathered granite as well as Hutton, Glenrosa and Bainsvlei soils. The grapes are hand-picked early in the morning and the individual vineyard blocks are initially processed separately.
In the cellar, Rustenberg combines traditional ageing methods with modern technology. Pneumatic presses, sorting equipment and temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks allow precise processing of the grapes. Predominantly French oak barrels are used for mature white and red wines. Individual parcels and barrel lots remain separate until the final blend so that origin, grape variety and vintage remain recognisable in the finished wine.
At the top of the range are two wines from individual vineyard sites. Peter Barlow is a structured Cabernet Sauvignon from a high-altitude parcel near Simonsberg, while Five Soldiers Chardonnay comes from its own site above Schoongezicht. The estate's classic wines also include the barrel-aged Stellenbosch Chardonnay and John X Merriman, a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other traditional Bordeaux varieties.
The Regional Range complements the portfolio with Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, among others. Rustenberg thus produces both approachable, fruit-driven wines and structured bottlings with development potential.
