Delheim Wine Estate on the Simonsberg
Delheim is situated on the south-western slopes of the Simonsberg north of Stellenbosch. The vineyards extend across different elevations and are shaped by weathered granite soils and the region's Mediterranean climate. Warm days meet cooler nights and air currents from False Bay. These conditions are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and other classic grape varieties of the Stellenbosch area.
Delheim's modern history is closely linked to the Sperling family. Michael Hans ‘Spatz’ Sperling came to South Africa from Germany in the early 1950s and gradually took over responsibility for the farm. Together with his wife Vera, he developed Delheim into a respected wine estate and opened the property to visitors at an early stage. The name Delheim goes back to Deli Hoheisen, who belonged to the family of the owners at the time.
Spatz Sperling also played an important role in Stellenbosch wine tourism. In 1971, together with Frans Malan of Simonsig and Neil Joubert of Spier, he was one of the driving forces behind the founding of the Stellenbosch Wine Route. The idea of opening estates to visitors and allowing wine to be experienced directly at its place of origin later became a model for numerous other South African wine regions.
Pinotage remains one of Delheim's defining grape varieties. The estate produces both a classic Pinotage and selected bottlings such as Vera Cruz Pinotage. On the Simonsberg, the variety combines ripe dark fruit with spice and a firm yet balanced structure. Delheim is also one of the South African producers that began using Pinotage for Rosé at an early stage.
Chenin Blanc plays an important role among the white wines. Alongside fresh, fruit-driven versions, Delheim also produces more characterful interpretations with extended lees ageing or spontaneous fermentation. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay complete the white range. Among the reds, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are particularly important alongside Pinotage. Grand Reserve has for many years been a key part of the estate's premium red-wine range.
One of Delheim's special features is the combination of classic Stellenbosch tradition with a comparatively broad range of styles. In addition to dry white and red wines, the estate is also known for noble sweet wines. Edelspatz Noble Late Harvest has been one of the estate's signature specialities for decades and its name recalls Spatz Sperling.
Today Delheim is continued by the next generation of the family. Winemaking increasingly focuses on careful treatment of soils, water and natural vegetation. At Vin Africa, Delheim therefore represents a historic Stellenbosch estate whose story is closely linked to South African wine and whose range extends from Chenin Blanc to Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon.
