In 1698 free burgher Hendrik Sneewind received farmland in the form of a grant from Simon Van der Stel. Soon after receiving the grant the land was transferred to Captain Diemer whereby Diemersdal was founded. An old leather-bound inventory from 1705 revealed a record of 45 wine barrels, a wine press and glass bottles, evidence to the fact that wine has been vinified at Diemersdal for over 300 years. In 1885 Diemersdal was acquired by the Louw family who have skillfully and passionately been producing wines for six generations to date so establishing Diemersdal as a bastion of the Durbanville Wine Valley, one of the oldest wine growing regions in the Cape.

Diemersdal spans a total area of 340 hectares and is located along the cool slopes of the Dorstberg with 180 hectares planted under vine. The site at Diemersdal is a perfect manifestation of Durbanville’s unique terroir, a refined combination of topography, soil and climate. The vines at Diemersdal grow in prime conditions of well-draining, deep red Hutton and loam soils. In the afternoons the vines are exposed to cool Atlantic Ocean breezes. The vineyards are farmed under, unirrigated, dry land conditions so allowing for even ripening of fruit and optimum concentration in the berries.

Diemersdal produces a range of wines including five single varietal wines and three blends. The single varietal wines include six different Sauvignon Blancs, two Chardonnays, a Grenache, Merlot and a Pinotage. The three blends comprise of the Diemersdal Flagship Private Collection, MM Louw and the entry level Matys Red. Diemersdal produces traditional, classically styled wines that combine the best elements of both new and old world wines.

Situated to the North of Cape Town, the Durbanville wine region is a popular escape for locals being mostly younger families with an appreciation for the family-friendly ambience of the estates. In comparison to the touristy areas of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, the Durbanville Wine Route delivers wines of high quality and exceptional value to which the wines of Diemersdal bear testimony.
