Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate on Walker Bay
is situated directly on the Bot River Lagoon between Cape Town and Hermanus. The vineyards extend for around 2.7 kilometres along the seaward-facing side of the estate, with some beginning only about three metres above sea level. Proximity to the Atlantic and the cold Benguela Current create a distinctly maritime climate with cool winds and comparatively low daytime temperatures. As a result, the grapes ripen slowly and retain freshness and natural acidity.
The vineyards were established between 2003 and 2007. In 2013, Penny Streeter OBE and her husband Nick acquired the approximately 200-hectare property and developed Benguela Cove into an independent wine and agricultural estate. Johann Fourie joined the estate in 2016, and the new gravity-flow cellar opened in 2017. Today Fourie heads the winemaking and shapes the estate's cool, origin-focused style.
The soils within the estate are unusually varied. Weathered Bokkeveld shale, sandstone, quartz, iron-rich gravel and granite occur depending on the parcel. Together with differing aspects and the strong influence of the lagoon, they create numerous small microclimates. Varieties grown include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Sémillon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
Sauvignon Blanc is one of Benguela Cove's defining white varieties. Estate Sauvignon Blanc combines citrus and tropical fruit with herbs, lively acidity and often a slightly saline minerality. Chardonnay shows a more structured side of the cool site, while Sémillon plays an important role in selected bottlings. The small Catalina range places particular vineyards and limited lots more strongly in the foreground.
Among the red wines, Pinot Noir and Syrah benefit particularly from the slow ripening conditions of Walker Bay. Pinot Noir shows red fruit, spice and a relatively fine structure, while Syrah combines darker fruit and pepper notes with maritime freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon and the Bordeaux blend Collage broaden the range with more powerful, structured reds. The Estate Collection is produced entirely from grapes grown in the estate's own vineyards.
Cap Classique is also an established part of the portfolio. Cuvée 58 is made by traditional bottle fermentation and combines Sauvignon Blanc with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The unusual use of Sauvignon Blanc gives the sparkling wine a particularly fresh style shaped by the coastal location. A Cuvée 58 Rosé is produced alongside the classic version.
Benguela Cove differs from many Cape Winelands estates through its immediate proximity to the sea. Instead of warm inland sites, the vineyards here are shaped by the lagoon, wind and Atlantic Ocean. At Vin Africa, Benguela Cove offers characterful cool-climate wines from Walker Bay, ranging from fresh Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Syrah and structured Cabernet blends.
