Alvi’s Drift
is one of the defining wineries of the Breede River Valley and exemplifies modern South African viticulture with a clear sense of origin. The family-run estate lies on the banks of the Breede River, one of the region's most important lifelines. Fertile alluvial soils, a warm climate and the cooling influence of the river combine here to create ideal conditions for expressive, approachable yet precise wines.
The Name Alvi’s Drift goes back to a local landmark: a shallow crossing over the Breede River that was created on the family land at the beginning of the 20th century. The man behind it was Albertus Viljoen "Oupa Alvi" van der Merwe, patriarch of the family. In 1928 he made sporting history by scoring the first try against the All Blacks on African soil. Two years later he had a bridge built over the Breede River, which soon became known as "Alvi's Drift".
Founded and still shaped by the van der Merwe family, Alvi's Drift follows a clear philosophy: quality begins in the vineyard. The approach is accordingly sustainable, with careful water management, nature-oriented farming and a deep understanding of the individual parcels. The result is grapes with optimum ripeness and balance, providing the foundation for the estate's unmistakable style.
Stylistically, Alvi's Drift wines stand for clarity, freshness and varietal character. Varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage are approachable, juicy yet structured. Particularly characteristic is the balance between ripe fruit and lively acidity, a hallmark of the Breede River region that Alvi's Drift consistently brings to the fore.
In the cellar, too, the winery follows a modern, restrained approach to vinification. The aim is to let the origin speak rather than the technology. Oak is used selectively and in moderation, while freshness and drinkability remain the priority. This makes the wines suitable both for uncomplicated enjoyment and as versatile food companions.
Today, Alvi's Drift is internationally established while remaining down-to-earth: a winery that interprets South African wine authentically, reliably and in a contemporary way, with wines that express their origin and are a pleasure to drink.
